Shed Size Guide
Most shed returns come down to one of two things: the shed did not fit the spot, or the mower did not fit the door. Both are avoidable with a tape measure and twenty minutes.
Step 1: Measure the spot, not the shed
- Width and depth. Measure the usable ground in inches at the widest and deepest points, then subtract 24 in. from each (12 in. of clearance per side). What is left is the largest exterior footprint that fits. Compare against the exterior dimensions on the product page, not the nominal size in the name.
- Height. Look up: eaves, tree limbs, utility lines, a window you want to keep clear. Note the lowest obstruction. Also check whether your municipality or HOA has a height limit for accessory structures (commonly 10 to 15 ft; our tallest shed is 10 ft.).
- Setbacks. Many towns require an accessory structure to sit 3 to 10 ft from the property line and a few feet from the house. Confirm the number before you pick a spot. See the permit guide.
- Door swing and approach. Hinged double doors need clear space in front equal to the door width. Sliding doors and lift lids need none. Make sure a mower can approach the door in a straight line.
- Drainage and level. Avoid the low corner of the yard where water sits. Every shed needs a level base; a spot that is already close to level saves a morning of digging.
Step 2: Measure what goes inside
Take the widest measurement of the largest thing you plan to roll in, usually a mower deck or a snow blower, and add 4 in. That is the minimum door opening you need. Then add up the floor space of everything: a push mower is roughly 2 x 5 ft with the handle, a riding mower with a 42 in. deck is about 4 x 6 ft, a wheelbarrow 2.5 x 5 ft, a bike 2 x 6 ft (or 2 ft. of wall when hung). Add 30 percent for walking room. Compare against the interior dimensions.
Step 3: Pick a size band

Common mistakes
- Buying the nominal size. An "8 x 10" is 8 ft. 2 in. by 10 ft. 2 in. outside. If your spot is exactly 8 ft. wide, it does not fit.
- Forgetting the door. A 48 in. mower deck does not go through a 48 in. door; it needs 56 in.
- Ignoring height inside. Interior height at the eave is lower than at the ridge. If you want to stand up along the walls, check the interior height on the product page.
- Buying for today. Sheds fill up. If you are between two sizes, the larger one is almost always the right answer, unless the permit threshold is in between.
